The two other buses immediately returned to the school following the crash, and students were released to their parents.
"A lot of people were screaming and they were hanging from their seatbelts", the 11-year-old told CBS2's Dave Carlin.
The bus was carrying 38 students from East Brook Middle School in Paramus and seven adults, including the driver.
The injured were transported to six different hospitals, and some are undergoing surgery.
The Democratic governor went to the school and says his heart is "broken by today's tragedy". It is unclear how many people died.
Theo Ancevski, a student riding on the bus, told the AP he was sitting in the fourth row from the front when it crashed. The bus was said to be occupied at the time.
"I heard a scraping sound and we toppled over the highway", he told the station outside a hospital.
He said some students evacuated through the emergency exit on the vehicle's roof while others scrambled out of windows.
At least two people were killed and dozens more injured Thursday when a school bus collided with a dump truck on Interstate 80.

"The children were all over, outside", said Morris County Office Of Emergency Management Director, Jeff Paul.
Several victims were reported ejected in the crash, which knocked the bus off its chassis and onto a highway median.
The NTSB investigates civil transportation accidents, such as plane and train crashes.
Another Twitter user shared a photo of New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy from the Propelify Innovation Festival in Hoboken on the same morning, revealing that the state official commented on the crash, "asking everyone for thoughts and prayers for the students and chaperones involved".
Fire fighters were seen working on one side of the bus around an hour after the crash.
Robinson said the district was cancelling school trips for the rest of the year. Route 80 is closed in both directions in the area, police said. The front end of the bus appears to have been crushed in the wreck. School bus crashes killed 902 people in other vehicles over that span.
The school is located about 22 miles from New York City.
"It's a horrific scene", Mount Olive Mayor Rob Greenbaum said.
