A Kansas judge sentenced a man who killed an Indian engineer and wounded two others in a possible hate crime previous year to life in prison.

Witnesses said Purinton yelled, "Get out of my country!" before shooting and killing Srinivas Kuchibhotla and hurting Alok Madasani and Ian Grillot, who had tried to intervene.

Wounded in the attack were Alok Madasani, Kuchibhotla's co-worker at USA company Garmin Ltd, which makes navigational and fitness-tracking devices, and Ian Grillot, an American who tried to intervene.

Purinton still faces federal hate crime charges, as federal authorities allege he targeted Kuchibhotla and Madasani because they are from India.

The life sentence was part of a plea agreement.

"Today's sentencing in the murder of my husband will not bring back my Srinu, but it sends a strong message that hate is never acceptable", she said, according to CNN affiliate KCTV.

They were attacked at a bar in Olathe, Kansas, that Kuchibhotla and Madasani used to visit after work at their Garmin office on February 22.

As Johnson County District Court Judge Charles Droege told 52-year-old Adam Purinton on Friday that he likely "won't leave prison alive", the convicted murderer briefly lowered his head.

The Kansas City Star newspaper reported that at least one bystander said Purinton shouted "get out of my country" before opening fire on Kuchibhotla and two other men who were having after-work drinks at Austins Bar and Grill in Olathe.

But Kuchibhotla's widow, Sunayana Dumala, said in a statement directed to Purinton that she wished he could have seen beyond her husband's skin color to "the handsome and kindhearted person underneath it". Dumala said she hoped Purinton would one day realize the "magnitude of your mistake".

After the shooting, Purinton drove 110 kilometers to Clinton, Missouri, where he admitted the shooting to a bartender at a restaurant.

"I wish Adam Purinton had the ability to see beyond my husband's skin colour and the handsome and kind-hearted person underneath it", Sunayana said.
