Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is under fire for planting a kiss on the lips of a Filipino woman during a live event. "It was a despicable display of sexism and grave abuse of authority", she said in a comment to local media.
During the appearance late Sunday in front of a mostly Filipino crowd, Duterte called the woman onstage and pointed to his lips. "I assure you, for me and even the President, there was no malice in the kiss".
"Even if the act was consensual, it was the president, possessed of awesome, even intimidating power, who initiated it", Hontiveros said in a statement sent to Al Jazeera.
The 73-year-old, who has been labelled a misogynist by his critics, has made numerous controversial remarks about women, including jokes about rape.
"No men, the price for this is a kiss", he said, while calling out to a woman in white from the cheering crowd, "Are you ready to kiss?"
"They should be able to criticise Duterte's inappropriate and wrongful actions, because when people start tolerating a leader's offenses, it becomes blind fanaticism".
