President Donald Trump will meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in a one-on-one meeting with only translators present when the two men sit down in Singapore for their historic summit, the White House said Monday.
Even Mr Kim's two recent trips overseas to neighbouring China were not reported to the North Korean population until he had returned home.
"We're prepared to take actions that will provide them sufficient certainty that they can be comfortable that denuclearization isn't something that ends badly for them", he said.
All eyes are on Singapore for this event, with 2,500 journalists from all over the world descending onto the city-state to cover the summit.
Of this, half is on security, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Sunday.
It will certainly be an exciting day and I know that Kim Jong-un will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before ...
"There are only two people that can make decisions of this magnitude".
While advisers say Trump has been reviewing briefing materials, the president insists his gut instincts will matter most when he gets in the room with Kim.

Tensions between the two countries escalated in 2017 after Pyongyang stepped up efforts to boost its nuclear weapons programme. The White House says Trump will leave Singapore Tuesday, because the talks have "moved more quickly than expected".
Kim told Lee: "The entire world is watching the historic summit between the DPRK and the United States of America, and thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparation for the historic summit".
Balakrishnan also said that the Singapore government was footing the hotel bill for Kim and his delegation who are staying at the plush St Regis hotel here.
Kim met with Lee on Sunday. A US official says the leaders then plan to meet one-on-one, joined only by translators, for up to two hours before admitting their respective advisers.
Trump, after the first-ever meeting between USA and North Korean leaders, had been scheduled to fly back to Washington on Wednesday morning after spending Tuesday with Kim in Singapore. "I'll tell you what the Marshall wants more than anything".
Trump has also raised the possibility of further summits.
Kim Yo Jong gained notoriety at the Winter Olympics in South Korea. Trump descended from Air Force One into the steamy Singapore night, greeting officials and declaring he felt "very good" before being whisked away to his hotel via a route lined with police and photo-snapping onlookers.
Mr. Trump's top economic adviser, Lawrence Kudlow, said Mr. Trudeau's press conference had been a "betrayal" because Mr. Trump couldn't afford to show any weakness before his meeting with North Korea.
But North Korea now deems itself "a nuclear state", and insists the USA must end its "nuclear threats and blackmail" as a precondition for denuclearization, according to a statement last month from First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Kye Gwan.
