A pilot whale has died after swallowing 80 plastic bags in southern Thailand.

The male pilot whale was found in a canal in Songkhla, a province in the south of Thailand. A team of veterinarians spent five days trying to save the pilot whale, who ultimately died.

After its death, authorities extracted 80 of the bags in total from its stomach, weighing around eight kilograms. The latest example is a dead whale who was found with 17 pounds of plastic in its stomach.

The department's chief theorized that the whale had mistaken the plastic bags for food, but after eating them had become "sick and unable to hunt for food", Reuters reports.

Jatuporn Buruspat, the head of the Marine and Coastal Resources Department, told Reuters that the agency will use the whale's case to call for action on ocean pollution during World Oceans Day later this month.

In April, a 33-foot sperm whale weighing almost 15,000 pounds was found dead on a Spanish beach.
