The 2018 box office as a whole, which just hit $6.5 billion, is up 9 percent from past year, according to ComScore. It's also the lowest opening for a Marvel Studios sequel, but that's not necessarily a bad thing since the original opened to $57.2 million back in 2015. In the U.S., the movie pulled in $76 million, making it the 20th consecutive Marvel film to open #1 at the box office. Solo made just under $1 million domestically, bringing its domestic box office total to $211 million.
Following a blockbuster Thursday night preview, the box office for Ant-Man and Wasp has slowed down a bit, but not with bad numbers by any means, as the movie still outperformed the first by 33%.
I'll probably see it this week, but I don't think Ant-Man and the Wasp comes off as a "must see" Marvel movie. Not only did Ant-Man And The Wasp debut this weekend with an impressive $76 million, but Incredibles 2 retained its number two spot at the box office, causing Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom to slip to number three after being at the number one spot for the last two weeks.
Be that as it may, it makes Ant-Man and the Wasp's slightly disappointing opening... well, disappointing. Meanwhile, "Incredibles 2" narrowly stole the No. 2 spot from "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom". The studio has had a string of box office hits in 2018 with Avengers: Infinity War racking up over US$2 billion and counting, and Black Panther passing US$1.3 billion globally. In three weeks, the dinosaur tentpole has earned $333.3 million in North America. Everyone's favorite crime-fighting family has crossed the $500 million mark domestically and $700 million worldwide. So far, Incredibles 2 has made $773 million at the worldwide box office.

Also in the top five is Sony's "Sicario: Day of the Soldado". Overseas, Incredibles 2 made $61 million, bringing its global box office total to $268 million. The Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin-led sequel picked up another US$7.6 million, taking the domestic tally to US$35 million. Check out the rest of the box office numbers over at Box Office Mojo.
Also opening in limited release was Annapurna's Sorry to Bother You, which landed the best per screen average of the weekend with US$44,881. Boots Riley's film brought in $717,302 when it opened in 16 theaters. Between the billion dollar grossing tallies for Infinity War and Marvel's Black Panther, plus the impressive $727 million worldwide total now posted by Fox's Deadpool 2, superhero movies have made up 57 percent of the total box office in 2018.
