Speculation had been mounting over the National Basketball Association star's future after his player option with the Cavs expired over the weekend.
Los Angeles is among the teams in the mix to land James after his agent told the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday that he will not exercise his $35.6 million contract option for next season.
James has spent his last four seasons in Cleveland, making a triumphant return to his hometown team after four seasons with the Miami Heat.
Cleveland is looking to trade star power forward Kevin Love following LeBron James' departure.
The Lakers have failed to reach the playoffs for the past five seasons.

But the 33-year-old has interests beyond basketball and the massive Los Angeles market would give him a bigger stage and platform. Last year, James topped Michael Jordan as the all-time playoff scoring leader, beating Jordan's 20-year record.

Even Kobe Bryant, who spent his entire 20-year National Basketball Association career with the Lakers, saluted James. He added that Northeast Ohio "will always be home".
James doesn't make the Lakers a real threat to dethrone the Golden State Warriors if he's the only superstar on the team.
The meeting occurred after James' agent reportedly had conversations with the Cavaliers.
Sources said Caldwell-Pope will re-sign on a one-year, $12 million deal and that Stephenson has agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million deal.
