Netflix started giving users the ability to download their favorite shows to their devices back in 2016 so that episodes could be watched even without an internet connection, a feature which had been highly requested up until that point. Starting today, the app will be able to automatically delete downloaded videos once you've watched them. After all, you might not want to disconnect from that Wi-Fi network before your next episode is done. Smart Downloads also automatically deletes a downloaded episode once the user is done watching it.

Or you can also do so via App Settings. But as competitors like Amazon Prime Video began offering downloads, and as Netflix itself expanded internationally to markets where mobile connectivity wasn't as reliable as in the US, Netflix relented.
