Thirty people were shot in just 3 hours early Sunday in Chicago, with five mass shootings of three or more victims accounting for 25 of the casualties, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Numerous incidents occurred on Chicago's West Side, where 25 people were injured by gunfire.

Chicago Police Chief of Patrol Fred Waller said during a Sunday press conference that most of the shootings were being traced back to gangs.

"Detectives are working around the clock to investigate the incidents, build a timeline of events and identify any shooter", said Waller. One of the victims was a 17-year-old girl who was shot in the face.

Before the particularly violent Sunday, there were six shootings, none fatal, on Friday, and 15 shootings, one fatal, on Saturday. "Over the past 24 hours, Stroger's trauma unit received an unusually high volume of patients", Stroger Hospital said in a statement. Police say the violence is unacceptable and they say they continue to take illegal guns off the streets. "We are asking the families of trauma patients to limit visitation at this time to immediate family members only so staff may focus on patient care".

"I promise this city that we won't be defeated, we won't be overrun by that small group, that small element that is committing these reckless acts", Waller told reporters.
