On Twitter, he wrote: "Fake News reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower". He went on to distance himself from Trump Jr. and the meeting: "I did not know about it!"
Trump had earlier claimed that the meeting was about the adoption of Russian children, reported Reuters, a statement contradicted by Trump Jr, who said that the objective was to gather information on Clinton.
Later Sunday, Jay Sekulow, one of the president's lawyers, defended the 2016 meeting.
He later admitted he accepted the meeting with Veselnitskaya in hopes of obtaining damaging information on Clinton, but said nothing came of it.
But since then, the story about the meeting has changed several times, eventually forced by the discovery of emails between the president's eldest son and an intermediary from the Russian government offering damaging information about Trump's opponent, Hillary Clinton.
Trump's tweet was a "pretty remarkable shifting of explanations about this meeting", Stephanopoulos pointed out.
The tweets came after the president on Sunday defended Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian Federation lawyer and other operatives in June 2016 in hopes of obtaining negative information on Clinton.

Young Trump responded "I love it" when first offered the "dirt" on Clinton, the Democratic nominee.
The Post reported a few weeks later that Trump Jr.'s initial misleading statement had been "dictated" by Trump.
"I wasn't involved in the statement drafting at all, nor was the president", Sekulow claimed in July 2017. "I can tell you for a fact that we are constantly attacked by any number of people, and I think that this president will address this issue coming to 2018 and to 2020", he continued. White House Press Secretary, at the time, Sean Spicer said there was no evidence to believe "there was anything except for discussion about adoption and the Magnitsky Act".
In one tweet, he declared the media the "Enemy of the People" and accused outlets of sowing division and distrust.
President Trump is back at his resort in Bedminster, New Jersey, and this morning he released another flurry of tweets, including one about his son Don Jr. "They can also cause War!"
In another, he expressed frustration with both the media and Mueller's probe.
