A small plane crashed in a shopping center parking lot in Santa Ana, Calif. Sunday afternoon, with local media reporting several fatalities.
Photos from the scene show the plane upright but on its belly outside the South Coast Plaza shopping center in Santa Ana, where wreckage was seen in front of a Staples store.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the pilot issued an emergency call before going down near the John Wayne Airport in Orange County.
The plane also hit a auto, but no one in that vehicle was reported injured.

Ella Pham, 20, and her boyfriend were walking in the vehicle park on Sunday when they saw the crash, she told the Los Angeles Times. According to the FAA, the pilot of the aircraft, which is registered to a San Franciso corportation, declared a Mayday shortly before the crash.
There were no reported injuries on the ground, said Capt. Steve Concialdi of Orange County Fire. We looked up and we just saw a plane fall. They said she was 29 years old.
The aircraft was heading to John Wayne Airport, but it was unclear where it was coming from, according to spokeswoman Deanne Thompson.
The parking lot is shared by Staples, a CVS drug store, a Michaels' decorations store, and a Wells Fargo Bank branch.
