The competition is now wide open after Guice's season-ending injury.
The New England Patriots quarterback, who was held out of Thursday night's preseason game versus the Washington Redskins, has a minor sore back, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source informed of the issue.
Early indications were that Guice might have suffered a strained MCL, saying after the game that he "felt fine".
"Grabbing him in the second round was obviously a great treat for us, but character was never a concern", coach Jay Gruden said recently, pointing to injuries and the quality of running backs as reasons for Guice falling in the draft.

Firefighters were joined by colleagues from other counties as they tried to prevent the fire spreading. Thick black smoke from thousands of plastic pallets on fire could be seen across the East Midlands .
Schefter also mentioned Gronkowski's restructure from last season.
Guice injured the knee on an impressive 34-yard run that was ultimately called back because of a holding penalty.
The former LSU star was fourth on the Redskins' depth chart at running back, but was expected to have a significant role this season. He averaged an impressive 2.84 yards after contact per attempt and forced 35 missed tackles across 168 carries, ranking T-10th and 13th, respectively, among running backs with 100-plus carries that season.
