All the shootings occurred in unincorporated Bakersfield so they were handled by the Kern County Sheriff's Office.
As the deputy confronted him, the gunman turned his gun on himself to take his own life.
"This is highly unusual to have six people shot and dead in one incident", Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood told reporters on Wednesday evening. Authorities say that a husband and wife had a confrontation with a man at the business when the husband shot and killed him.
It was there that he and another male at the business entered into an altercation at around 5:20pm, according to ABC 7 News. He ran him down and shot him, according to authorities.
The gunman then went to a home where he shot and killed a man and a woman, the sheriff said. He stole a vehicle that was occupied by a woman and child, who managed to escape.

The main aim was to check the military's readiness to move troops large distances and test how closely infantry and naval forces cooperated.
The man then drove to a highway where he was confronted by a deputy. Officers gave chase and the suspect pulled into a business, got out of the vehicle and shot himself, King said. He said he emerged from his business in time to see the suspect running away.
All of it was captured by the deputy's body camera, according to reports. The sheriff did not release the ages of any of the victims as they are still trying to notify next of kin.
Except for the gunman's wife, officials provided no details on how the victims might have been related.
At the time of this writing, the suspect was not yet named. "But at this point, I'm pretty comfortable (saying) there will be a connection between all these players".
The investigation could take days, he said, because there are at least 30 witnesses who need to be interviewed.
