It will be the first mass-produced vehicle in the world to adopt such mirrors, the Japanese automaker said.
The Digital Outer Mirrors displays what is on the left, right and rear of the auto on a monitor inside the cabin that is stacked below the A-pillar.
Lexus says its new, seventh-generation ES is set to become available in October 2018 (in the Japanese market, at least) with what it describes as the "world's first" digital exterior mirrors. It's not the cleanest execution of the technology we've seen but it offers several advantages over conventional mirrors, according to Lexus. This allows for enhanced views of the area around the auto at night and in inclement weather, Lexus says. From its namesake, it replaces the mirrors for small exterior cameras that will provide drivers a clearer view of the vehicle's surroundings. The cameras in the Digital Outer Mirrors transmit the images onto 5-inch display monitors located inside the cabin at the base of the front pillars. The side cameras are shaped in a way to prevent accumulation of rain and snow from blurring the view.

The system automatically enhances the corresponding area―left, right or behind―when the turn signals are activated, or when the transmission is put into reverse.
The sedan still has stalks sticking out of its sides, but their lower-profile design reduces aerodynamic drag for fuel efficiency and cuts down on wind noise.
