But in recent years, it's her fight against cancer that's been in the headlines.
Olivia Newton-John has revealed she is battling cancer for the third time - after keeping her second fight with the disease a secret.
Newton-John, who turns 70 in a few weeks, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 and a tumour was found in her shoulder five years ago.
The star has previously spoken about the shock of the diagnosis, which came on the same weekend that her father died from cancer. She beat the cancer, but discovered in 2013 a lump in her shoulder after a auto accident.
"I thought "I don't really need to share this, it's my life and something I wanted to keep to myself", she told reporter Alex Cullen.
In a new interview with Australia's Sunday Night programme, Newton-John revealed doctors discovered a tumour at the base of her spine a year ago.
On a drive to visit her sister Rona just before she died of brain cancer, Olivia was in a auto accident.
Speaking on Australia's Channel Seven, she said: "My husband's always there, and he's always there to support me, and I believe I will win over it and that's my goal".

The base is used by USA special forces to train Syrian fighters who are confronting Islamic State militants. The United States does not seek to engage in battle with the Syrian government and those who supports him.
Olivia explained why she didn't go public with the news her cancer had returned for the second time. I see as part of my mission.
She's cut sugar out of her diet entirely and uses medical cannabis tinctures from plants that her husband, John Easterling, legally grows on their California property, to help with pain and sleep, and hopes Australia will legalize medical marijuana for similar reasons.
"I'm very lucky to live in a state where it's legal and I have a husband who is a plant medicine man - how lucky is that?" she said.
Olivia rose to fame in 1978 hit musical Grease, which she starred in alongside John Travolta, 64.
On her first impressions of John, who played her boyfriend Danny Zuko, she said: "He's a handsome man". I have a wonderful husband.
She told CNN: "I love to sing, it's all I know how to do".
"She told the show: "'There are other people out there doing much, much worse than me. I have all the animals that I adore. "I have nothing, really, to complain about", she said.
