For the second time this week, a Canadian NHL team from the Atlantic Division has controversially traded its captain to a USA team in the Pacific Division.
By the time majority had left the building in the afternoon, there was still no sign of captain Erik Karlsson. Fantasy hockey owners will surely be circling around San Jose with two of the game's most productive defenders playing on the same team. "We've had discussions about it, but you never really feel that it's going to come to fruition, a deal like this, until you actually get that call". "Today we made the proper decision".
A two-time Norris Trophy victor, Karlsson is a pending unrestricted free agent next July, due to break the bank as one of the top defensemen in the National Hockey League. GM Doug Wilson finally reeled in his big fish after trying to hook John Tavares and Steven Stamkos over the past two summers, among others.
It's also being reported that no contract extension is involved in this deal. "We look at Erik much like we looked at Evander [Kane in May], as a guy who fits now and in the future age-wise, style of game".
The about-face of the Senators in one year's time has been nothing short of incredible.
Oh, and the Bruins absolutely do not have to worry about Karlsson torching them in April again if the Senators somehow repeated their straight-up weird trend of having one awful year (last year) followed by a playoff-caliber year.
- San Jose's first-round choice in either 2019 or 2020 (not lottery protected); if the Sharks miss the playoff in 2018-19 it will be a 2019 selection, otherwise it will be in 2020.
Sarri gives injury update ahead of Cardiff clash
Ruben Loftus-Cheek is a doubt for the game with an injury, while Emerson and Davide Zappacosta are also unlikely to feature. Terry made 36 appearances last season in the Villa team that were beaten by Fulham in Championship play-off final.
One problem: the Senators may well be the first team ever to embark on an aggressive rebuild without their own first-round pick, which was conveyed to Colorado and is expected to be inside the top four. That nearly never happens in the National Hockey League, and the fact that it did is an indictment of the franchise, and of Melnyk himself.
"These two players that we acquired, on top of the two National Hockey League players that will play October 4, (plus) the draft picks, we feel we got a very good return for a player like Erik Karlsson", said Dorion.
That's because the Senators have north of $20 million committed each of the next two seasons to Bobby Ryan, Craig Anderson, Zack Smith and Marian Gaborik.
Still, Wilson sounded confident in the Sharks' ability to keep Karlsson beyond this season. There is doubt as to whether Gaborik will be healthy enough to play again.
Oh, and the Senators' two building blocks - Mark Stone and Duchene - do not have contracts beyond this season. They know they want to get younger and they'll have to sit down with their current group of veterans to see what kind of role they want to play in all of these changes.
"It's up to us to put it all together, put it on the ice, have a good season and, like I said, having that focus on not being satisfied with making the [Stanley Cup Playoffs] or going deep in the playoffs, but winning the Stanley Cup". They went 45-27-10 a year ago, finishing sixth in the conference, and then swept the Anaheim Ducks in the first round before losing to the eventual Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights.
