Tens of thousands of Brazilian women took to the streets on September 29 to protest against the misogynist politics of Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right candidate in Brazil's October 7 presidential race.

But he did manage to give an interview that aired on a rival network at the same time, raising criticism from other candidates that he was dodging discussion and unprepared to lead the nation.

Final opinion polls on Saturday will show whether Bolsonaro has enough support to win the election outright on Sunday.

He is trailed by Workers' Party candidate Fernando Haddad, who has 21 per cent of support among those polled.

Bolsonaro's chances of winning on Sunday would be boosted if there is high abstention, and if many voters cast blank or spoiled ballots, said Leonardo Barreto, head of Brasilia-based political consultancy Factual.

Leftist Guilherme Boulos said he feared a new military dictatorship would begin with a Bolsonaro presidency.

Even political rivals conceded that Bolsonaro's odds are improving. The Datafolha firm had Bolsonaro up one point at 36 percent and Haddad unchanged at 22 percent since a previous survey two days ago.

Earlier, in a live speech over Facebook, Bolsonaro rejected accusations he was racist, sexist and homophobic, though he has faced charges for hate speech against these groups.

He vows to loosen gun laws so citizens can defend themselves, protect family values and slug it out with powerful drug gangs responsible for a record 64,000 murders in 2017.

Brazil's real currency was up more than 0.5% against the dollar on Friday, while the Bovespa stock index rose 0.3%. Last week he asked his economic advisor Paulo Guedes and his running mate retired general Hamilton Mourão to hold off on making public statements after contradictions emerged over economic policy.

However, he pledged to keep state oil company Petroleo Brasileiro SA, known as Petrobras, and lender Banco do Brasil SA in government hands.
