However, Akbar has termed his resignation as an appropriate step in a bid to seek justice in a court of law in his personal capacity.
It seems that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is not satisfied with MJ Akbar's resignation as it has called for criminal proceedings against the former Minister of State for External Affairs.
Kovind accepted the resignation of Akbar from the Union Council of Ministers with immediate effect.
"The defamation case will be heard by a magisterial court in the Patiala House court complex on October 18", Akbar's Counsel Sandeep Kapur said on Tuesday. He has denied the accusations and filed a criminal lawsuit against one of the women for defaming him.
The development was welcomed by Congress with party spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi saying, "The resignation of M J Akbar after serious charges were levelled against him by senior women journalists who worked with him is a vindication of the power of truth even if it began with one courageous person speaking up".
OnTuesday, 20 women journalists who have worked with 'The Asian Age' newspaper, have come out in support of their colleague Ramani, said a joint statement issued by them. Highly-placed sources who did not wish to be identified, however, said the decision "came from the very top" and "the extent of the allegations and Akbar's own aggressive reaction made the party high command believe this was getting untenable".

In her statement, Ramani said that she is ready to fight the allegations Akbar levelled against her.
After Akbar's resignation, Ramani tweeted: "As women we feel vindicated by MJ Akbar's resignation". It added: "We in the Congress Party salute the women who stood their ground despite the brazen stance of the Modi government".
Akbar, who returned from an official trip overseas on Sunday, called the allegations "false" and "baseless" and a conspiracy to hurt his reputation.
