Taylor Swift made her political preferences public for the first time this week and it seemingly sparked mass voter registration.
Vote.org spokeswoman Kamari Guthrie told the Post she can't say for sure yet how much Swift's message directly affected the spike in registrations, but the website saw a definite jump in traffic in the wake of her Instagram.
"Taylor's post has helped bring out young voters: a majority of new registrations since Sunday have been from people between 18 and 29 years old (about 64K out of the 105K total new registrations)", Vote.org said in a statement regarding Swift's Instagram post. Guthrie reports that vote.org has received a total of 5,183 registrations in the state to date - 2,144 of which came in during the last 36 hours.
Trump, who has endorsed Blackburn, said on Monday that Swift "doesn't know anything about" Blackburn, when he was asked at the White House about the pop star's post. I can not vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love.
Swift, 28, noted Blackburn's voted against equal pay for women, against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act that protects women from domestic abuse, and opposes marriage equality. One of the politicians she praised was Phil Bredesen, the state's Democratic candidate for Senate, and Bredesen has taken to Twitter to respond to Swift's kind words. She's leading now substantially, which she should. "I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG".
Fox Hires Former White House Communications Director Hope Hicks
Mr Trump is also reported to have a close relationship with host Sean Hannity, a leading cable news cheerleader of the president. This summer he named former Fox News co-president Bill Shine as assistant and deputy chief of staff for communications.
Swift wrote to her 112 million Instagram followers that she could not support GOP Rep. Marsha Blackburn in the Senate race because "her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me". These are not MY Tennessee values ...
Swift's reach is massive, she has nearly 30 million more Twitter followers than President Donald Trump and has acquired a loyal fan base since her first album released 12 year ago. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway.
In a number of states, the deadline to register to vote is today, October 9th.
Of the roughly 240,000 people who have registered on Vote.org for the upcoming midterm elections on November 6, almost half, or about 102,000, are between the ages of 18 and 29, the website found.
