It was reported Wednesday that Bryce Harper turned down a 10-year, $300 million contract offer from the Washington Nationals, the team's seemingly final attempt to keep him from exploring the free agent market.
In the meantime, Harper will continue to field offers from other teams in hopes of landing a record-setting deal. Nevertheless, the Nationals balked, and Harper spent the rest of the season with Washington, while Puig remained in Los Angeles, helping the Dodgers reach the 2018 World Series. But the Dodgers could have a change of heart. "But I'm uncomfortable with the statement that we're a better team without him". And the Nationals, of course, could up-the-ante. Nightengale says that Harper is seeking a 13-year deal that tops the average annual value of $34.42 million that Zack Greinke now has in his deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
With Harper now shopping around for his new destination, several suitors have been named. The Nationals wanted to lock up their star, but Harper felt $30 million per year for the next decade wasn't enough money. For those of you without a math degree, $35 million per year over a 13-year period would be $455 million. Hence why so many players have taken so long to sign contracts in recent years.
Harper's contract season of 2018 was a mixed bag. With that said, he also homered 23 times, drove in 54 runs and walked 78 times prior to the All-Star Break, so his first-half only disappointing by the high standards that he's set for himself.
