The killer, Ian David Long, 28, was a former machine gunner and Afghanistan war veteran who was interviewed by police at his home last spring after an episode of agitated behaviour that authorities were told might be post-traumatic stress disorder.
He wore black clothes, a black baseball cap and a mask partially covering his face. Investigators have not commented on whether mental illness played a role in the rampage.
"(He) said to her, 'Hey I got to go handle a call.
Among those killed was a three-decade veteran of the sheriff's department, 54-year-old Sergeant Ron Helus, who was married, had a grown son and was close to retirement.
The Borderline massacre was the fourth mass shooting in the United States in less than two weeks. The mother of the 27-year-old man killed in the latest attack, Telemachus "Tel" Orfanos, said her son survived Vegas only to die inside Borderline, less than 10 minutes from his home.
Coffman then thanked reporters for their work on covering the massacre, describing this as "an absolute heart wrenching time for me and my family" and sending prayers to others affected. "I don't want thoughts", she says.
"And the two words I want you to write are: Gun control", she added.
Several said they were also survivors of the mass shooting at the country music festival in Las Vegas previous year when a gunman firing from a high-rise hotel killed 58 people. "And he didn't come last night", she told the Times.
Woolsey Fire in Ventura County quadruples overnight; 30,000 evacuated
Camp Fire has already reached Chico, home to 90,000 people, about 20 miles of west of Paradise and 90 miles north of Sacramento. Cal Fire Director Ken Pimlott said a "very significant, unsafe weather pattern" would continue through the end of the weekend.
"Only him and I know how much I love, how much I miss him", Coffman said. But he declined to engage on questions on whether the nation needed stricter gun control laws.
"Maybe there was a motive for this particular night, but we have no information leading to that at all", the sheriff said. The incident happened in April, when yelling and loud banging noises coming from the home Long shared with his mother prompted a next-door neighbor to call authorities. "I already didn't wish it on anybody to begin with for the first time", Kelly said outside his home in Thousand Oaks.
Long was "the victim of a battery" at a bar in Thousand Oaks in January 2015, Dean said.
About 18 months ago, Don and Effie MacLeod heard "an very bad argument" and what he believes was a gunshot from the Longs' property. Police said Long used a.45-caliber Glock handgun with an illegal, extra-capacity magazine, first shooting a security guard outside the bar.
"All of a sudden we heard the "bang, bang" of the gunshots and it just started going insane and people were pushing".
Mourners have gathered to hold hands, sing and to wonder how one of the safest cities in America could become a killing zone.
On Thursday, in the wake of the Thousand Oaks shooting, most country singers offered their sympathies and prayers without mentioning anything political - except for a few who have already been outspoken. "Tonight Thousand Oaks takes its place with those cities, who in order to move forward will rely on hope".
