But now Tesla seems to finally be taking a step toward the vision the company first laid out in 2016.
Tesla Inc. said on Friday it had received a subpoena from the Securities and Exchange Commission over forecasts it made about Model 3 production in 2017, a set of targets the electric vehicle company failed to hit on time. But the company fell far short due to problems with automation at its Fremont, California, factory, making just 793 in the last week of 2017 and 2,700 for the entire year.
U.S. regulators have demanded Tesla hand over information as part of a criminal investigation into whether Elon Musk's electric auto maker misled investors over its production figures. "As is our normal practice, we have been cooperating and will continue to cooperate with government authorities. Should the government decide to pursue an enforcement action, there exists the possibility of a material adverse impact on our business, results of operation, prospects, cash flows, and financial position".
Tesla finally met that target in June of this year.
