A gunman killed 12 people including a sheriff's deputy after he walked into a Southern California bar and started shooting late on Wednesday night, police said.

The sheriff's deputy who died was identified as Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year-veteran of the department, Dean said. Helus and a colleague from the California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene within three minutes of the first calls and entered the bar, said Dean.

The sheriff says he told Helus' wife "he died a hero because he went in to save lives".

'Ron was a hardworking dedicated sheriff's sergeant. He gave his all.

"He went in to save lives, to save other people", Dean said of Helus, his voice breaking.

A friend, Sgt. Eric Buschow, said Helus took on some of the toughest assignments, was on the SWAT team for much of his career and worked in narcotics and investigations.

Colleagues of a policeman who died after being among the first to respond to a mass shooting at a packed California bar have hailed him as a "hero".

Authorities and witnesses say the gunman wore dark clothing and didn't say anything as he fired inside the bar. The extent of the surviving victims' injuries wasn't immediately known.

A police officer is among the wounded in the mass shooting at the Borderline bar in the city of Thousand Oaks near Los Angeles, reports say.

Two-step lessons in country dancing were being offered Wednesday at the Borderline, according to its website.

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean briefs reporters at the intersection of United States 101 freeway and the Moorpark Rad exit as police vehicles close off the area responding to a shooting at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, on November 8, 2018.

The venue in a quiet, upscale residential suburb was hosting an event for college students, with possibly several hundred young people in attendance, Captain Garo Kuredjian of the Ventura County Sheriff's office said.

Mr Coffman said that Cody was preparing to join the US Army.

Police said Ian David Long, armed with a Glock 21.45-caliber handgun with an illegal extended magazine, opened fire inside the large venue around 11:20 p.m.

Whitler said then she heard "Get up, he's coming!" and people trampled on each other to get out.

Screaming in fear, patrons rushed for the exits, dived under tables and used barstools to smash second-floor windows and jump to safety as gunfire reverberated through the Borderline Bar & Grill, a hangout popular with students from nearby California Lutheran University.
