The Trump administration announced new measures Thursday to deny asylum to illegal immigrants, citing emergency national security powers that'll end longstanding humanitarian protections, according to multiple reports.
The regulations released, in conjunction with an order expected to be signed by President Donald Trump, would effectively ban migrants who cross the USA border with Mexico illegally from qualifying for asylum. "The US government should absolutely be encouraging the safe, orderly and efficient processing of asylum claims at ports of entry, but the way to do that is by providing sufficient resources to receive and process asylum seekers in a fair and humane manner".
A group of Central American migrants, representing the thousands participating in a caravan trying to reach the US border, undertake an hours-long march to the office of the United Nations' humans rights body in Mexico City, Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018. They are now about 600 miles away. "Today's rule applies this important principle to aliens who violate such a suspension or restriction regarding the southern border imposed by the president by invoking an express authority provided by Congress to restrict eligibility for asylum".
The new policy would kick in only after the president issues a proclamation blocking entry of illegal immigrants across the southern border. Omar Jadwat, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Immigrants' Rights Project, said they were clearly illegal. More than 7,000 active duty troops could eventually be deployed, Defense Department officials said. The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA 208 (b)(2)(C)) unambiguously states that ineligibility grounds for asylum established by regulation must be "consistent with" section 208 of the INA, which explicitly says that aliens may lodge asylum claims "not at a designated port of entry".

He called a current caravan, which is still hundreds of miles from the United States border and dwindling in numbers, an "invasion" and said it would bring hardened criminals to USA streets.
A senior administration official said the White House hopes that by funneling asylum claimants to ports of entry, officials will be able to assess and adjudicate the claims more rapidly.
Members of the migrant caravan arrive at the shelter of the Church of the Assumption, in the city of Puebla. It's unknown whether those in the caravan, many fleeing violence in their homeland, plan to cross illegally.
Thanks to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, asylum rules were reformed to prevent migrants from receiving asylum by claiming they are fleeing violence, gangs, or domestic abuse. And in the last five years, the number of those requesting asylum has increased by 2,000 percent, it said.
