Walker is getting bipartisan pressure to veto the measures, including from Democratic Gov. -elect Tony Evers. The legislation also shields the state jobs agency from his control until September and cuts into the powers of the incoming Democratic attorney general.
MI voters last month passed a constitutional amendment to have the 13-member commission of four Democrats, four Republicans and five independents handle redistricting instead of the partisan Legislature.
SB 884 would limit the duties of the attorney general by taking away his power to name a solicitor general to represent the state in major lawsuits.
Meanwhile, in MI, the legislature will also remain in control of Republicans, but the governor, attorney general, and secretary of state will all be Democrats for the first time in almost three decades.
"Republicans who control Michigan's Legislature voted Wednesday to advance a measure that strips campaign-finance oversight power from the Democratic secretary of state-elect, and they moved to give lawmakers authority to stand up for GOP-backed laws if they think the incoming Democratic governor and attorney general are not adequately defending the state's interests", writes the AP. He says a handful of people desperately want to "cling to power".
In Michigan, a similar drama is playing out as the Republican-controlled House and Senate are seeking to limit the power of incoming Democratic state officials, including Gov. -elect Gretchen Whitmer. But with an assist from his GOP allies in the state legislature, Walker appear poised to sign off on a suite of measures created to strip power from his successor. The Assembly approved it on a 56-27 vote about two hours later, sending it on to Walker, with one Republican, Rep. Todd Novak, defecting.
The new legislation would allow districts to apply to become "innovative districts" that are exempt from most state education rules and would answer to the new commission.
Israel Demands UNIFIL Take action over 'Hizbullah Tunnel'
The Trump administration fully supports "Israel in its military operation to address these tunnels", according to Hook. Jonathan Conricus, said three areas have been discovered that harbor tunnels.
The measure was approved on a 17-16 vote with all Democrats and one Republican voting against it.
Republicans dispute criticism that the legislation would undermine the role of the attorney general.
The legislature says the bills were necessary to balance power between the executive and legislative branch. "If you vote for this, shame on you". Multiple people have come forward to say they were hired to go to people's homes and collect ballots (which is illegal), all of whom were hired by a campaign operative with a known history of criminal behavior.
"Maybe we made some mistakes giving too much power to Gov". "To you, this is all about politics".
The measures also restrict early in-person voting to two weeks before an election.
The legislation would empower the Legislature to intervene in any suit at any stage - a right already granted to the attorney general. For example, Kaul could be prevented from withdrawing the state from a federal lawsuit against the Affordable Care Act, which was a central part of both his and Evers' campaigns. The Trump administration in October granted Walker's request for a waiver that would allow the state to enact the controversial policy, which Evers opposes and recently told reporters he might seek to unwind using his executive power.
Democrats question the timing and counter that the legislation is an unconstitutional overreach. "She's perfectly capable of figuring out who is a Democrat and who is a Republican without the help of this lame-duck Legislature".
