Will college football's most famous trophy go to Tagovailoa? However, the Alabama quarterback received a couple of positive signs Thursday as he beat out fellow Heisman finalist Kyler Murray for both the Walter Camp and Maxwell awards given to college football's player of the year. Tagovailoa also won the Walter Camp Award, another award that goes to the best player in the country.
AP player of the year Kyler Murray adds the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's top quarterback as ESPN's College Football Awards show in Atlanta began. Murray and Tua will battle it out once again for the Heisman, but Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins remains a dark-horse for the award. The other finalists for the Walter Camp were Murray, Minshew, West Virginia quarterback Will Grier and Kentucky linebacker Josh Allen.
While Tagovailoa was voted the best player, he didn't win best quarterback.
"It's humbling and an honor to be named AP Player of the Year, to be mentioned in the same realm as a lot of great players, a lot of hall of famers", Murray said. Tagovailoa received 13 first-place votes (117 points) and Haskins was listed first on four ballots (55 points).
Tobacco giant Altria makes massive bet on cannabis
Canopy Growth received a multibillion-dollar investment from Corona owner Constellation Brands in August, CNN Business reported. The deal will expand Cronos' board from five to seven seats, with Altria getting a total of four of them.
Named the AP Player of the Year earlier Thursday, Murray leads the nation in total yards (school-record 4,945), points responsible for (306), passing efficiency rating (205.7; FBS record is 198.9), yards per pass attempt (11.9; FBS record is 11.1) and yards per completion (16.8, tied). The last Maxwell/Davey O'Brien split among quarterbacks came in 2016 when Lamar Jackson won the Maxwell Award and Deshaun Watson won the Davey O'Brien Award.
Murray is having a historic season.
Murray was Mayfield's backup last season and won the starter's job in preseason practice.
As for raw numbers, Murray has thrown for 4,053 yards, 40 touchdowns and just seven interceptions while completing 71 percent of his passes.
