A police officer has been killed in mob violence over alleged cow slaughter in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The police inspector, identified as Subodh Kumar Singh, died on the spot as he was hit by a blunt object on the head while he was trying to stop the rampaging mob.

A 20-year-old man was also killed.

"The Chief Minister has assured us that he will remain with us in this hard time and ensure justice for us".

The officer's elder son Shreya is studying MBA while his younger son Abhishek is a student of engineering.

"My father is dead, tomorrow it can be some IG or a minister", he told a news channel.

Meanwhile, Additional Chief Secretary Avaneesh Awasthi said that Adityanath would be meeting the family members of deceased SHO Subodh Kumar Singh at his official residence Thursday morning. But their worst fears came true as the mob turned violent and began pelting stones at them.

Uttar Pradesh minister Atul Garg later said the loans amounted to Rs 25-30 lakh. "The policemen retreated. Someone from the crowd opened fire that killed the police inspector".

The state government said it was also focusing on uncovering a possible "political conspiracy" behind leaving out animal carcasses in a state where the practice is banned and the slaughter of a cow remains a highly emotive issue.

The prime accused in the Bulandshahr violence on Wednesday put out a video claiming his innocence even as teams of Uttar Pradesh Police are on the lookout for him.
